Measuring Business Analysis Performance

When Business Analysis activities are started at the PROJECT LEVEL or ORGANIZATION LEVEL it is very important to measure the performance. Performance confirms the effectiveness of the Business Analysis activities that opens an array of opportunities to make the practice even more better and effective. It is very essential for an organization to assess the competitiveness of Business Analysis Practice as a whole. Let us try to understand a bit more on this.

HOW TO MEASURE BUSINESS ANALYSIS PERFORMANCE
Usually there are two ways when it comes to measuring of Business Analysis performance

01: BUSINESS ANALYSIS PERFORMANCE (At the organization Level)
Every MNC work on multiple domains and every domain has a dedicated practice BA manager who conducts this assessment on Monthly or Quarterly basis. The results of this assessments are usually used to make the practice much more competitive.

Lets say company ABC Inc. works on Finance, Healthcare and Travel Domain. So for each domain there would be one dedicated BA Manager or Principal Consultant or Business Architect who would manage and strategize the Business Analysis competencies at the Organization Level. If you look a level down, there would be multiple projects running under each domain and would be mapped with multiple Business Analysts. So its BA Managers responsibility to assess the competency of various projects under that domain not the Business Analysts competency. The feedback obtained from these projects will help the organization to strengthen their competitiveness in the industry. As we all know that every organization have a unique USP when it comes to competencies. Some may be good in HR Software, Some may be good in Cloud Implementation while some may be good in Finance Software. Like most banks in India and Sri Lanka prefer Finnacle software because it has became a unique product for Infosys. Today they need to sell themselves when it comes to this software and they are market leader in it. But what about other domains? How can they do better on these domains? What they need to compete here with their peers? Well this is exactly where Business Analysis Performance Assessment would help.

02: BUSINESS ANALYST PERFORMANCE (At the project level)
Here we assess individual Business Analysts performance at the project level. This ensure the effectiveness of the Business Analysis work at an individual level.

Lets say Julia is an Entry level BA working on a Finance project and struggling hard to learn the domain. In this case it would be very obvious that her competency needs a domain knowledge upgrade. But we can only help when we assess her skills. This is exactly where Business Analyst Performance assessment helps. After this its the competency managers responsibility to make the necessary help available to her to ensure effectiveness of Business Analysis work in the project she is working on.

HOW DO WE ASSESS THE PERFORMANCE?
Majorly, performance are assessed in two way:

01. QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT MEASURES
A Qualitative indicator cannot be measured in numbers. The KPIs for these could be: Opinion, Feedback, Expressions,Traits, etc…
The Qualitative indicators mostly focus on WHY and are measured in terms of PERCENTAGE rather than concrete numbers like in the case of Quantitative indicators.

Examples can be:
★ Improved working relations with the customer.
★ Customer satisfaction level with the vendor services
★ Customer confidence level for the Business Analysis Team
★ Increased customer Engagement in the Project
★ Contribution to the Business Analysis competency as a whole.

02. QUANTITATIVE ASSESSMENT MEASURES
A Quantitative indicator on the other hand focuses on numbers.

Examples can be:
★ Number of BA Tools used
★ Number of BA Techniques used.
★ Number of feedback received by the stakeholders.
★ Number of missed requirements
★ Number of Defects

A collection of these KPIs comprising of both QUALITATIVE and QUANTITATIVE measures will be used to understand the areas of improvement for Business Analysis at various levels like:
★ Stakeholder Engagement level
★ Requirements Engineering level
★ Communication and Collaboration level
★ Requirements Management level
★ Process level
★ Project level
★ Organization level

In addition to these two many more assessments measures are also used for effective evaluation of the business analysis performance
